5 Steps to Improve Your Credit Score

12/22/2022

If you are in the trucking business you should always be looking to improve your credit score? It may take time, but it is possible.  Your credit history is a premium rating factor for most if not all insurance companies.

Follow these 5 steps to boost your credit score:
  1. Check your credit report: Request a copy of your credit report from all three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) to ensure there are no errors or inaccuracies affecting your credit score. You can do this for free once a year at annualcreditreport.com.
  2. Pay your bills on time: Payment history is a crucial factor in determining your credit score. Make sure to pay all of your bills on time, including credit card bills, student loans, and mortgage payments.
  3. Lower your credit card balances: Your credit utilization ratio, or the amount of credit you're using compared to your credit limit, can significantly impact your credit score. Try to pay down your credit card balances to below 30% of your credit limit.
  4. Only apply for new credit when necessary: Each time you apply for new credit, it can negatively impact your credit score. Only apply for credit when you truly need it, and avoid applying for multiple accounts in a short time frame.
  5. Consider a credit-builder loan: A credit-builder loan is a type of loan designed to help individuals build or improve their credit. These loans usually have a small balance, a low interest rate, and a set repayment schedule. By making timely payments on a credit-builder loan, you can improve your credit score.
Overall, it's important to use credit responsibly in order to build and maintain a good credit score. This includes paying your bills on time, using credit wisely, and not taking on more debt than you can handle. By following these steps, you can improve your credit score and improve your insurance premium.

IMPROVED CSA SCORES
CSA scores are important since higher scores equal higher premiums.  So how can you go about improving them?  Here are six tips:
  1. Hire using a pre-employment screening program.  By having a good hiring process to help you make smart hiring decisions, you can lower your crash rate by 8% and driver out-of-service rates by 17%, according the FMCSA data.
  2. Implement dual-facing dashcams.  Seatbelt violations and following too close raise a driver's accident risk.  Dual-facing dashcams address both.
  3. Perform proactive maintenance. During roadside inspections, the most common violations are for lights (30%) and tires (10%).  Pre and post-trip inspections can alert drivers to minor maintenance issues before they turn into violations.
  4. Dispute FMCSA mistakes.  Everyone makes mistakes now and then - including the FMCSA.  Regularly check your CSA score and dispute incorrect violations.
  5. Use a weigh station bypass solution.  Weigh station bypass is smart for a myriad of reasons, one of which is this:  fewer weigh station pull-ins mean fewer inspections and potentially fewer violations.
  6. Choose the right electronic logging device (ELD). Not all ELDs are the same.  Choose one that is easy for drivers to use and includes document management.  Most even come with packages for dashcams.  Click here to get a free ELD with Motive:  go.gomotive.com/RedOx-Insurance-Agency.html?utm_source=Keep+Truckin

Here are the top 5 ways that truckers find freight to haul

1. Brokerage firms:  Trucking brokerage firms act as intermediaries between truckers and shippers, connecting them with available loads and handling the logistics of the transport.  Many truckers work with multiple brokerage firms to find available loads.
2. Load boards.  Load boards are online platforms that allow truckers to search for available loads in their area.  Some load boards are free to use, while others charge a free.  You can get access to DAT here:  www.truckersedge.net/
3. Carrier relationships:  Trucking companies that have a good reputation and strong relationships with shippers may be able to secure long-term contracts or regular business from their clients.
4. Networking:  Truckers can also find loads by networking with other truckers, shippers, and industry professionals.  This can include joining trucking industry associations or participating in trade shows and events.
5. Self-marketing: Some truckers take a more proactive approach by self-marketing their services to shippers and businesses in their area. This can include reaching out to potential clients directly or using online platforms like LinkedIn or social media to showcase their services.

By using a combination of these methods, trucks can find a steady stream of available loads to haul.

As a trucking business owner, it's important to protect your assets and your livelihood with the right insurance coverage. But why is trucking insurance so crucial for your business? Here are 10 reasons why every trucking business needs insurance:
  1. To protect against financial loss: Accidents and unforeseen events can happen on the road, and trucking insurance can help protect your business from financial loss in the event of an accident, theft, or other unexpected occurrence.
  2. To meet legal requirements: Many states and localities have specific insurance requirements for trucking businesses, and failing to have the necessary coverage can result in fines, legal action, and other consequences.
  3. To protect your cargo: Trucking insurance can provide coverage for your cargo in the event of damage, loss, or theft, ensuring that you're not left with financial losses due to events beyond your control.
  4. To protect your equipment: Your trucks and other equipment are a significant investment, and trucking insurance can help protect that investment in the event of damage or loss.
  5. To protect your employees: If you have employees, it's important to have workers' compensation insurance to cover any injuries they may sustain on the job. Trucking insurance can also provide coverage for lost wages and other expenses related to workplace injuries.
  6. To protect your customers: If you're transporting goods for other businesses, they may require that you have liability insurance to cover any damages or losses that may occur during transportation.
  7. To protect your reputation: Having the right insurance coverage can help protect your reputation and credibility as a trucking business. Customers and clients will be more likely to trust a business that is properly insured.
  8. To protect against lawsuits: If someone sues your business, trucking insurance can provide coverage for legal fees and other expenses associated with defending against the lawsuit.
  9. To protect against property damage: If your truck or other equipment damages someone else's property, trucking insurance can provide coverage for the damages.
  10. To protect against business interruption: If an accident or other event causes your business to temporarily shut down, trucking insurance can provide coverage for lost income and other expenses associated with the interruption.
As you can see, trucking insurance is a necessary investment for any business owner. It can provide peace of mind and protect your business from financial losses due to unexpected events. Don't risk leaving your business vulnerable - make sure you have the right trucking insurance coverage.
